Description
Canal Cottage is an early 19th-century canal house located on Station Road in Lower Heyford. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring limestone lintels, and has a Welsh-slate roof with brick stacks. The building has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys high. The symmetrical front has three windows and a central doorway, which is topped by a small stone canopy supported by shaped brackets, situated below a blind window. The outer bays contain 16-pane sash windows. The shallow-pitched roof extends at the eaves and verge, with stacks positioned at both ends. A rear wing extends from the right side and includes a large sash window, five panes wide, facing left. The interior has not been inspected. Attached railings curve out from the right side of the front and connect to panelled stone gatepiers at the center. To the left, a low brick wall connects a straight section of railings to the house, both of which adjoin a rubble wall leading to the canal bridge. This building was formerly the manager's house for Grantham's Wharf.
