Description
An inn and associated outbuildings, now converted into three houses, dating from the early 18th century with alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of colourwashed rubble with some wooden lintels, and has a Welsh-slate roof with brick stacks. It comprises a single range with later additions to the rear.
Darville House, forming the right-hand portion (originally the public bars), is two storeys plus an attic, with a three-window front. It features early 19th century, two-storey canted bay windows in the outer bays and a 16-pane sash window above a smaller bay window in the central bay. A six-panel door is located to the left of centre. Darville Cottage, to the left, has an irregular three-window front with renewed two-light casements, an additional entrance, and a right-hand bay that is of earlier construction and features a rubble flat arch over the ground-floor window. Old Barn Cottage, to the far left, was created from a former outbuilding range and has 20th-century casement windows. The rear additions to the houses are primarily 20th century, though a 18th-century rear wing exists behind Darville House, linked to an earlier beer store; all are now part of the house.
Inside Darville House, features include chamfered joists and beams on both floors, a large inglenook fireplace with a chamfered cambered bressumer, some 18th-century doors, and an upper flight of a quarter-turn staircase with winders. The roof incorporates butt purlins with through tenons. The interiors of Darville Cottage and Old Barn Cottage have not been inspected. The building was formerly the Red Lion Inn.
