Description
No. 2 London Road is a house that has been converted into part of a hotel. It dates from the early to mid-17th century and underwent alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed from limestone rubble with wooden lintels and features an old plain-tile roof with a rubble-and-brick ridge stack. It has a three-unit plan with a rear service wing and stands two storeys plus attics high.
The front of the building has three gables and three windows. At the first floor, it retains wooden ovolo-moulded mullioned-and-transomed windows. However, the ground floor has seen significant changes, including a large inserted vehicular entrance, a 20th-century doorway, a 20th-century bay window, and a deep three-light casement window with a rendered wedge lintel that is likely from the 19th century. The gable windows are mostly blocked, except for a two-light casement in the left gable.
There is a massive rubble-based stack located to the right of the centre, featuring three diagonal brick shafts. The rear of the building has a central gable, and the lower rear wing, which returns on the right, is likely mostly from the 18th century but extends from a short 17th-century gabled wing. This wing includes two plank doors, casement windows, and a 19th-century brick external stair leading to an upper door. The interior has not been inspected.
