Description
No. 4 London Road is a house that has been converted into part of a hotel. It dates from the 17th century and was altered in the 18th century. The building is constructed from part-rendered limestone rubble with some brick detailing, topped by an old plain-tile roof featuring a rubble-and-brick ridge stack. It has a three-unit plan and stands two storeys tall, with attics, and is partly raised to three storeys.
The front elevation, which is rendered, has two windows on the upper floors that contain 12-pane sash windows. The ground floor features two wider windows and a doorway. The right gable wall has similar windows. The lower third bay on the left side is obscured by No. 6, but its left gable wall shows a rubble construction with three-light casements across three floors. There is a small one-storey rubble wing attached to the gable wall, likely dating from the 18th century. A 17th-century rubble-based stack is located to the left of the higher roof and has three diagonal stacks. The rear of the building has brick dressings on the raised section. Inside, there is a winder stair that rises to the attics behind the main stack.
