Description
The Kings Arms Hotel is a hotel located in Bicester Market Square, dating from the 18th century, with some parts possibly being older. The building features rendered walls with some stucco decorations and has roofs made of Welsh slate and plain tiles, along with brick chimneys. It is designed in an L-shape and consists of three storeys on one side and two storeys plus attics on the other.
The front of the building has six windows, with the main entrance located in the third bay. This entrance features a six-panel door, an ornamental overlight, and a doorcase adorned with fluted pilasters and an entablature that displays the royal arms. There is a secondary entrance in the fifth bay, which has been converted into a window. All other windows, including those in the three-bay range that returns on the left, are fitted with 12-pane sash windows. The roofs are hidden behind plain parapets.
At the rear, there is a two-window range that extends as a wing and includes a carriage entry. This section likely dates from the early 18th century and has a steeply pitched tiled roof with paired brick stacks. It features flat-headed roof dormers and Venetian windows with pilastered mullions and jambs on each side wall. Additionally, there is another steep-roofed range to the right of the main building that extends to the back of No. 39 and likely shares a 17th-century chimney stack with it. The rear of the main range has 20th-century extensions. The interior has not been inspected.
