Description

Bee Hive Cottage, Bee Hive Veterinary Surgery, and the garage and entrance to Placketts are two houses likely dating from the 17th century, incorporating a medieval window, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The buildings are constructed from coursed squared marlstone with wooden lintels, featuring thatch and concrete plain-tile roofs, along with stone and brick stacks. They have a single-unit and two-unit layout, with carriage entries in a single range and stand two storeys tall.

The five-window range includes original carriage entries in the second bay and between the fourth and fifth bays, which now have later lower lintels and double doors, as well as an inserted garage door in the first bay. The first-floor windows in the first and second bays are leaded three-light casements, with the second bay forming a dormer over the entry to Placketts. Bee Hive Cottage, comprising the third and fourth bays, features three-light wooden casements, one of which has a stone segmental arch to the left of the doorway. Bay four contains two cellar windows: one is a two-light stone-mullioned window, while the other is a re-used medieval window with two pointed lights under an enclosing arch.

The veterinary surgery, located at the extreme right, has a raised tiled roof at the front and includes a four-light shop window and a three-light first-floor casement. The steep-pitched roof has a stone-based ridge stack between the third and fourth bays and a brick stack on the right gable. The rear of Bee Hive Cottage features a gabled stair projection. Inside, the central stack in Bee Hive Cottage has a large open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer. At one point, this range was known as The Beehive Public House.
