Description

Hamelin Cottage is a house that likely dates from the early to mid-18th century, although it has earlier origins. It is constructed from marlstone rubble and brick laid in Flemish bond, featuring wooden lintels and a thatched roof with brick end stacks. The building has a three-unit plan with a service bay, standing two storeys tall plus attics.

The main section of the cottage has a four-window brick front facing the garden. At the first floor, there are three-light 18th-century leaded casements. The ground floor features a similar window to the right, a central six-panel door with a 20th-century canopy, and a large 20th-century bay window to the left. The steep-pitched roof includes two small inset dormers with two lights each.

To the right, there is a two-storey service bay that has later brick lean-to extensions, which obscure most of its front. The left end wall and rear wall are made of rubble and feature additional leaded casements at the rear. Inside, the roof trusses have heavy principals that cross at the apex, supporting through purlins and a ridge piece.

Additionally, there is a rubble wall to the left of the road frontage, approximately three metres high and extending for about ten metres, topped with thatch. This building is noted for its early use of brick in a vernacular style.
