Description
St. Mary's House is a farmhouse, now a house, likely dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. It was partly remodelled and probably extended around 1830. The construction is of coursed squared marlstone with some ashlar dressings, featuring a stone-slate roof and thatch covering, along with brick stacks. The building originally comprised four units and has a four-window front. The three bays to the right have a regular arrangement with a central panelled doorway set within a columned ashlar doorcase, it has matching panelled reveals and a 12-pane sash above, and 16-pane sashes in the flanking bays. A wider bay to the extreme left displays earlier cross windows with wooden lintels, replacements for wider original openings. The steep-pitched roof has stone gable parapets and stacks to the left of the centre and to both gables. A single-storey bay with a thatched roof adjoins the right gable wall. The rear elevation has additional cross windows to the two bays on the left. Inside, the left-hand unit features a large open fireplace, a flanking spiral stair, a stop-chamfered spine beam with run-out stops, and 18th-century doors, shutters and cupboards. The 19th-century section contains elaborate architraves and ceiling cornices, along with a large stair hall with a wide stair. The balustrade combines ornamental cast-iron and stick balusters, topped with a mahogany handrail. The roof is a butt-purlin type. It was likely originally a two-unit plan with a central through passage.
