Description
Grove House, originally a farmhouse and now a house, dates from the late 17th century, with an earlier wing at the rear also from the late 17th century. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a gabled concrete tile roof, with end stacks made of stone finished in brick and a similar ridge stack at the rear. It has an L-plan layout with a rear right wing and stands two storeys high with a four-window range. The windows have flat stone arches and include late 18th century to early 19th century six-pane sashes, along with a two-storey square window to the left featuring plate-glass sashes. There are also 20th century dormers.
The rear wing includes a stair-turret and an 18th century one-storey service range with a hipped roof to the right. The left side of the rear wing has a four-window range with flat stone arches over blocked windows, three six-pane sashes, and a 20th century door. Inside, the central stair-hall features a fine late 17th century dog-leg staircase with a landing and barley-twist balusters, along with late 17th century bolection-panelled doors. To the left, there is a notable late 17th century bolection-panelled room. The first floor has an 18th century panelled room to the left, with 18th century panelled doors and boxed beams. The rear wing has boxed beams, an early 19th century fireplace with paterae on the ground floor, and winder stairs with late 17th century simple turned balusters. The attic features late 17th century butt-purlin roofs.
Additionally, there is a subsidiary feature: an 18th century wall to the front right, made of limestone rubble with stone slate coping, which projects approximately 14 metres forward.
