Description
The Grove Farmhouse is a farmhouse that underwent remodelling in the early to mid-19th century, originally built in the mid-18th century, with later additions and alterations. It features red brick on a sandstone plinth, with chamfered angle quoins on the front and regularly coursed, dressed sandstone blocks on the right return. The roof is hipped and covered with slate. The building is in an L-plan configuration, with a later range extending at an angle to the rear on the left side.
The farmhouse has two storeys, with a floor band and stepped eaves cornice on the front, and a cill band and moulded eaves cornice on the right return. The front has three windows; the first floor features late 20th-century casements, while there is a contemporary window in a 19th-century pointed opening to the left of the entrance, with a similar blocked opening to the right. The central entrance is sheltered by a 20th-century gabled porch over a 19th-century six-panel door that has a pointed Gothic overlight.
There is an integral brick end stack on the left side. The right return has four 20th-century casements in 19th-century openings on each floor, with the ground floor windows being pointed. There is a blind mock gun-loop in the centre of the first floor and a similar gun-loop on the end wall. A brick ridge stack is located at the centre, with another similar stack behind the ridge on the right. The ground floor of the end wall has two blind rectangular openings.
A 19th-century addition at the rear features early 19th-century vertical posts with light horizontal timbers and red brick infill on the first floor, while the gable end has been clad or rebuilt in late 19th-century red brick. Attached to the front and rear of the farmhouse are two sections of wall made from roughly coursed sandstone rubble and coursed blocks with coping. Both walls end in rectangular piers, with the front section also featuring mock arrow-loops and a rectangular turret projecting to the centre.
