Description
Hatchetts Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 16th or 17th century, possibly incorporating parts of an earlier building, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of red brick that partly conceals and partly replaces a timber frame, with a rendered left gable on the cross-wing. The roofs are covered with plain tiles. The building has an L-plan layout, featuring a long hall range on the left and a cross-wing of roughly equal length projecting to the rear on the right.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with a dentilled eaves cornice on the hall range, while the cross-wing has one storey and an attic. There are three-light 19th-century casements directly below the eaves on both sides of the hall range, with segmental-headed casements immediately below; one of these has been replaced by a late 20th-century French window. The cross-wing features one 19th-century casement on each floor of the left gable, with the lower window having a segmental head.
The entrance to the hall range is located to the right of the centre, accessed through a mid-19th-century round-arched brick porch. Inside, there is a plank and muntin inner door with decorated strap hinges, and a Salop Fire Insurance Plate is positioned directly above the entrance. A tall red brick ridge stack is located immediately to the left, featuring paired rebated shafts and a top that was rebuilt in late 19th-century brick.
The front wall of the cross-wing, which was formerly timber framed, has been completely rebuilt in late 20th-century brick and includes two contemporary casements, a gabled eaves dormer, and an inserted garage. The building retains a prominent ridge stack with moulded capping to the left of centre, as well as a small subsidiary brick stack in the roof slope to the left. The left gable shows exposed single-purlin ends.
