Description
49 Church Street is an early 19th-century house constructed from coursed limestone rubble, featuring a gabled artificial stone slate roof with stone slates at the rear and brick end stacks. The building has an L-plan layout with a rear right wing and stands two storeys tall, presenting a symmetrical three-window range. A timber lintel sits above a 19th-century six-panelled door, which has two glazed panels and is framed by a columnated stone porch. The ground floor includes late 19th-century square bay windows, while the first floor has timber lintels over six-pane sash windows. The three-storey rear wing contains eight-pane sashes. There are mid-19th-century brick and early 20th-century stone extensions at the rear. Inside, the house features early 19th-century panelled doors and dados, neo-classical fireplaces in the rooms on either side, and a mid-19th-century staircase. Notably, the house served as a ladies' school for a brief period before 1846. Marks on the left gable wall indicate that this early 19th-century house was converted from and extensively rebuilt from a former barn.
