Description
These are a pair of cottages located on Church Street in Kidlington, dating from the late 17th century to the early 18th century. They have later rear outshuts and 20th-century rear extensions.
The cottages are constructed of roughly-cut limestone rubble with a steeply pitched thatched roof and brick stacks.
The plan consists of a pair of two-storey, two-room cottages with end stacks and single-storey rear outshuts.
On the exterior, each cottage has a two-light, six-pane timber casement window beneath a timber lintel in the outer bay on each floor. The entrances are now covered by a continuous timber canopy, with replacements for the original 20th-century part-glazed doors. A small, upper window is visible on the west gable wall, to the rear of the stack.
The interior of the cottages was not inspected, but it is believed that number 84 retains a plain, unchamfered beam.
The cottages are designated at Grade II for their special interest as a pair of late 17th to early 18th century vernacular cottages situated near the parish church.
