Description

14 Church Road is a house and shop built around 1800, with part of the rear range added later in the 19th century and a late 19th-century shopfront. The building is timber-framed and covered in tile-hanging, topped with a slate roof featuring end brick chimneystacks on the front range and another at the end of the rear range. The front range has three storeys and three windows, all of which are sash windows with narrow glazing bars and moulded wooden architraves. The central windows have 12 panes, while the end windows have 16 panes. The ground floor features a projecting shopfront with a tapering fascia and iron railings above, flanked by two square bays with roll mouldings and five large panes on either side. There is a recessed entrance with a panelled area above and double doors that are mainly glazed, with small panels at the base. The rear range is two storeys high and also tile-hung, with one sash window on the first floor and a penticed ground floor.

Inside, the shop has wide horizontal boards and internal windows. The rear ground floor includes a cambered brick fire surround and a plank ledged door on pintle hinges. There is a wooden half-winder staircase, and the first floor has a wooden fireplace with a 19th-century cast iron firegrate. In the attics, some lath and plaster is visible, along with a cupboard featuring L-hinges. Historically, the shop has operated as a grocer for many years.
