Description

This is a shop with a dwelling above, likely built in the late 16th or 17th century. It was extended to the rear (south) during the 17th century and altered in the 19th century, with the front range being raised and a new shop front installed.

The building is timber-framed, with a rendered north-facing front elevation and a brick chimney stack. The roof is covered in slate. It is arranged as two ranges on a rectangular plan extending south from Corn Street. The front range, facing Corn Street, has a single-room plan, while the rear wing is two bays deep.

The principal north range is three storeys high across one bay. The ground floor has a 19th-century timber shop front with a box fascia and cornice. It features a console bracket to the east, a plate glass shop window framed by plain pilasters, and an angled doorway containing a 20th-century glazed door to the west. The first floor has a 20th-century timber casement window within a possibly earlier, moulded timber frame. To the west of the window is the head of an iron tie. The second floor has a 19th-century horizontal-sliding sash window with six-by-six glazing. To the west of the window is an iron strap running onto the west elevation. A timber fascia board is immediately above the window.

The rear wing has exposed timber framing on the second floor of the west side.

Internally, it is understood that the first floor of the front range features an unchamfered axial beam, an exposed corner post, and a corner fireplace. The second floor has a fielded, two-panel door, and the attic above has a large purlin. The rear range is said to contain jowled posts, slightly cambered tie-beam trusses with queen and V-struts morticed to the principal rafters, trenched purlins, a diagonal trenched ridgepiece, and exposed wall framing.
