Description
39 High Street is a timber-framed house built in the late 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. A shopfront was added in the late 19th century or early 20th century, along with changes to the windows and interiors.
The west elevation facing High Street is rendered, while the east elevation on Butchers Row features painted brickwork. The original timber frame is believed to be preserved behind these facades. The shopfront is made of timber and glass, and the roof is covered with plain tiles.
The building occupies a rectangular plot, with its main facade facing west towards High Street and a rear facade facing east onto Butchers Row. It has three storeys plus a basement, with a single bay on both the east and west elevations, topped by a gable roof. The shopfront on the High Street side includes a large plate glass window above a moulded timber stallriser, framed by beaded pilasters. There is a half-canted, recessed entrance to the south featuring a 20th-century door and a plain overlight. The window frame has brackets for external shutters, and above the shop window and entrance is a moulded fascia board supported by console brackets, which holds a moulded flat hood. The first and second floors each have a centrally-placed timber casement window from the mid to late 20th century. The gable above the second-floor window jetties out, with plain boxing around the bressumer and eaves, and modern bargeboards.
Inside, the building is believed to have exposed chamfered and moulded ceiling beams.
