Description
The war memorial in Southborough was built in 1921 to honor 207 men from Southborough and High Brooms who lost their lives in World War I. Additional tablets were later added to commemorate the 44 individuals who died in World War II. Constructed by Messrs Wood and Wallis of Tunbridge Wells, the memorial is made of blue Forest of Dean stone. It features a Cross of Sacrifice that stands about 15 feet tall, mounted on an octagonal moulded shaft and a large octagonal plinth adorned with a cornice that has floral and foliate motifs. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the eight faces of the plinth, with further tablets for the World War II casualties added to the moulded plinth. The memorial is elevated on three octagonal steps.
