Description
The structure consists of garden walls, gate piers, railings, and gates located to the south and west of Matfield House, dating from the early 18th century, with some later repairs. The walls are made of brick, laid partly in English bond and partly in Flemish bond, and are complemented by iron railings and gates. The walls enclose the gardens and feature brick coping, although some sections have been replaced with concrete.
The corner piers are square in section and topped with ball finials. To the south of the house, the iron railings have square section verticals with spear finials, arranged in bays separated by wrought iron panels. The railings rise towards the central gate, which is flanked by square section brick piers with ball finials. The central gate is elaborately designed with a nowy-headed shape, framed by wrought iron panels and topped with a wrought iron overthrow. Additionally, there is a second wrought iron gate with a round-headed overthrow providing access to the garden on the east side.
