Description
Canterbury Cottage and Hodge Cottage are two houses, originally three, built in the 18th century. The ground floor is constructed of Flemish bond brick with blue headers, while the first floor is tile-hung. The roof is covered with peg tiles, and there are brick stacks.
The buildings are arranged in an L-plan, with Hodge Cottage facing east and Canterbury Cottage adjoining it at right angles, facing south. They are located at the northwest corner of Matfield Green. Hodge Cottage is single depth and two rooms wide, while Canterbury Cottage, which was formerly two houses, adjoins it to the southwest.
The exterior features two storeys. Hodge Cottage has an asymmetrical three-window front with regular fenestration. There is a 20th-century gabled brick porch to the right of the center. The first floor has three early 19th-century sashes with 16 panes, two similar sashes to the left of the porch, and a 12-pane fixed window to the right of the porch, which includes one top-hung opening pane. The left return of Hodge Cottage has two small one-light 20th-century windows on the ground floor. Canterbury Cottage has an asymmetrical four-window south front with a fielded panel front door to the left of center. The first floor features three 18th-century two-light casements, some with square leaded panes, and there are four ground floor 20th-century windows.
The interior has not been inspected.
