Description
Tollgate is a mid-19th century tollhouse located on Highgate Hill in Hawkhurst. It is constructed from sandstone and features a plain tiled roof. The building has a simple rectangular plan, with a single storey and attic facing the road and two storeys at the rear. The roadside elevation includes a plinth and a shaped kneelered parapet gable, which has both concave and convex curves, topped with a cross-shaped pinnacle. A central stack with a star-plan moulded design is present.
On the ground floor, there is a single narrow attic light and a stone canted bay window with mullions. The right side has a boarded door set in a porch, which features a smaller shaped gable and a loop-cross in the end wall, along with a shouldered door opening to the roadside. There is also a boarded door at the rear right on the ground floor, and stone mullioned windows on the return and rear elevations. The house is situated on a high embankment, which is part of the engineering works related to the associated turnpike road, now designated as the A4229.
