Description

Hawkhurst Primary School is a school building constructed in 1863, designed by architect Joseph Clarke at a cost of £1,600. The school is predominantly made of red brick, featuring polychrome bands, some stone dressings, and a plain tiled roof. It was originally built as schoolrooms with a master's house to the left (east).

The main block is a single storey with a brick dogtooth cornice that runs throughout the building. It has a gabled roof with a small stack on the left and a heavily buttressed central semi-dormer. This semi-dormer has a half-hipped roof and includes a combined bell tower with a moulded cross set in its base, topped with a stumpy pyramidal roof supported by colonettes. The right side of the building features a half-hipped cross wing, balanced on the left by the almost detached two-storey master's house.

The windows are mullioned, with chamfered surrounds and shafts throughout. The windows in the central semi-dormer and cross wing have transoms, while those in the master's house feature relieving arches, with the cross wing having a cusped roundel above. There is a half-glazed door with sidelights to the left, which connects the main range and the master's house. The master's house has a half-hipped transverse wing with a half-glazed door in the re-entrant angle, sheltered by a raking and arcaded porch.

There was originally an additional block at the rear, designed in the same style, featuring a hipped roof with louvred dormers and large hipped semi-dormers, but it has wooden casement windows.
