Description
HAWKHURST THE MOOR TQ 7429-7529 (north side) 18/361 Hawkhurst Primary School GV II School. Built as National schools, 1863, Joseph Clarke, architect at a cost of £1600. Predominantly red brick with polychrome bands, some stone dressings, and plain tiled roof. Originally schoolrooms with master's house to left (east). Main single storey block with brick dogtooth cornice (carried throughout the ensemble) to gabled roof, with small stack to left, heavily buttressed central semi-dormer, half-hipped with combined bell tower with moulded cross set in base and with stumpy pyramidal roof on colonettes, and with projecting buttresses, half hipped cross wing at right, balanced to left by the almost detached 2-storey and half hipped master's house. Mullioned windows, with chamfered surrounds and shafts throughout, those to central semi-dormer and cross wing with transoms, and, as master's house, with relieving arches over, that to cross wing with cusped roundel. Half-glazed door with sidelights to left in passage connecting main range and master's house, the latter with half-hipped transverse wing, with half-glazed door in re-entrant angle, covered by raking and arcaded porch. Originally detailed additional block to rear in same style, with hipped roof with louvred dormers and large hipped semi-dormers but with wooden casement windows.
