Description

No 18 Goods Station Road is a purpose-built ironmongers store, now functioning as a shop. It was constructed in 1888, with the shop front altered in the 20th century. The front is made of cast iron with glazed panels, while the other elevations are brick. The building features a hipped slate roof with a pitched roof light and eaves tiles, and it stands three storeys tall. The front elevation includes end rendered pilasters that extend through the first and second floors, topped with stylized brackets and ball finials. There is a wide cornice and fascia bands, and a continuous six-light window divided by pilasters with flat arches between. Inside, there is a central galleried atrium supported by twisted cast iron columns on the ground floor and plain cylindrical columns on the first floor. The open well has wooden two-tiered balustrading and boarded panelling, with a simple queen post type roof construction. This building is noted for its technological innovation as an early example of structural ironwork in a shop. The rear part of No 18 is not of special interest.
