Description
Nos. 54-55 High Street is a shop premises, now functioning as a wine bar, built in 1894. The building is constructed of brick and cast-iron with stone dressings, and the roof is concealed. It has a rectangular plan and features full-width showroom windows on each floor at the front.
The exterior consists of three storeys with a symmetrical three-bay front. Each floor is supported by brick end pilasters and two slender cast-iron columns, along with cast-iron beams that have cornices; the top beam includes a frieze of festoons. The ground floor shop window has been replaced, but the fascia above retains its cornice and swagged terminal brackets. The former showroom windows above are arranged in a 3:3:3 light configuration, with glazing bars on the top lights. The building is topped with a stone balustrade featuring truncated finials and a pedimental centerpiece that has a monogram relief in the tympanum, inscribed with "Established 1775 Erected 1894." These premises were built for Hatcher and Sons Ltd. The interior has not been inspected.
