Description
Ivydene, Mersham Cottage, and The Beauty Box are two cottages and a shop located on The Street in Benenden. The cottages date from the late 18th century, while the shop was built in the late 19th century. The cottages feature weatherboarding on the ground floor and are tile hung on the first floor, topped with an old tiled roof that has a half-hipped design on the right side. There is a central square brick chimney stack that was raised in the late 19th century. The front of the cottages has two triple casement windows, and the ground floor includes a central doorcase with a flat hood and a four-panelled door adorned with a Head of Mercury door knocker. The structure is two storeys high with two windows and a catslide roof at the rear. The shop has a ground floor made of red brick and a first floor that is tile hung, featuring bands and diamonds of curved and painted tiles, along with a tiled roof. The shop has a projecting gable with curved bargeboards, a pendant, and a finial, supported by two iron columns, and includes one four-paned sash window.
