Description
Laurel Cottages comprise a row of four cottages situated on The Street, Benenden. Numbers 2, 3 and 4 date to the late 18th century, while number 1 was constructed circa 1890 by George Devey. Numbers 2, 3, and 4 are two storeys and four windows in width. The ground floors are built of red brick with some grey headers in the brickwork, while the first floors are tile-hung. They have a tiled roof with a weatherboarded half-hipped gable end to the right. A modillion eaves cornice runs along the roofline. There are three triple 19th-century casement windows. The ground floor features two late 19th-century pedimented wooden weather hoods supported by brackets, and plank doors. Number 1 is constructed of red brick with grey headers on the ground floor, and has a timber-framed first floor with plaster infilling. It exhibits an elaborate carved bargeboard with pendant details, and a two-storey five-light canted bay with lattice-paned windows. A stepped brick stack is located on the left side.
