Description

No 1, Alex Hughes Close is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century and was refronted in the mid-19th century. The building features a timber-framed block at the rear, which is clad in red brick on the ground floor and has a rendered first floor. The front displays a red and blue brick chequer block pattern. The roofs are plain tiled, with a train ridge at the rear and a half-hipped design to the south.

The front of the house has three gabled wings arranged symmetrically, with a lower central gable. There is a shafted 17th-century brick ridge stack on the south side of the main ridge, along with brick side stacks on either side of the front block. The house is two storeys high and has a three-window front. The windows feature heavy cement cornice-lintels and sashes with double vertical glazing bars in each blade. The first floor has a smaller window in the center, while the ground floor has large tripartite sashes in the outer bays. The central entrance is highlighted by a cornice lintel, a plain transom light, and a half-glazed door.
