Description

The Church House is a former Nonconformist church dating to approximately 1870, built in an Early English style. It is located on the south side of the High Street in Snodland. The building is constructed of irregularly laid Kentish ragstone with ashlar dressings and tiled roofs with gable parapets.

The building comprises a nave, a north-west tower, and a chancel. The tower has three stages, separated by bands, and features half-height stepped buttresses and a crenellated parapet. The first stage of the tower incorporates a doorway with a chamfered arch, above which are four joined lancet windows. The second stage has two larger lancet windows, and the third stage contains single pointed lancet windows with bell-louvres. The four-bay nave’s outer bays are partially obscured to the north by the tower and to the left by a projecting gabled vestry. Paired lancet windows with simple chamfers and drip-moulds are present throughout the nave. The two-bay chancel has chamfered lancet windows with drip-moulds.

The interior retains its original features from the period of construction. The ceiling is a simple, undecorated structure featuring hammerbeam trusses. Stained glass is present in all but two of the lancet windows. The interior also includes a boxed altar with a curtain and a framed reredos, an organ case with arches decorated with quatrefoils, stiffleaf, and finial details, choir stalls, a lectern, a stone pulpit, a font decorated with Early English inset arches and mouldings, a simply decorated parclose, pews with simple detailing, roll-top armrests, and various brass plates and inscriptions.
