Description
Grove Cottage is a pair of cottages that were part of a gunpowder works, now functioning as a single house. They date from the early to mid-18th century and were altered in the late 19th century. The structure has brick footings and a weatherboarded timber frame above, featuring a central ridge stack and a tiled half-hipped roof.
The building has a single-depth plan with a rear outshut. It is two stories tall and originally had a four-window range, with each cottage having two windows. Now, only the right-hand doorway remains, and the windows include 6/6-pane casements and 4/4-pane casements in four hipped dormers.
The interior was altered in the 1990s. Historically, the Oare Gunpowder Works operated from the 18th century and continued to develop until its closure in 1936. The cottages were among three houses at the northeast end occupied by staff of the works, and they are the only surviving remains from the 18th century works.
