Description

The Birches is a building dating from around 1835, located on Fordcombe Road in Penshurst. It is two and a half storeys tall and features five windows. The roof is fairly low pitched and hipped, covered with slate, and has bracketed eaves. The exterior is finished in stucco with incised lines, and there is a moulded string course at the cills of the second-floor windows. The sash windows on the first and second floors have glazing bars, and the first-floor windows are adorned with moulded architraves. At the front, there is a long veranda with a glazed roof, supported by square columns, which projects at both ends. This veranda is likely from around 1900.
