Description

Bassetts Farmhouse is a 17th century and earlier restored farmhouse located on Moat Lane in Cowden. The west elevation features brick and tile hanging with a tile roof that has one end half hipped and a ridge stack. It has painted wooden casements and an 18th century half-glazed panelled door with a projecting hood above.

The north elevation, dating from around 1620, is two storeys high with an attic gable end window. It has a stone plinth made of random courses with modern ashlar buttressing. The exposed framing includes vertical half-timbering with plaster infilling.

On the ground floor, there is a projecting lattice window with an oak transom and frame supported by a central carved wooden bracket, flanked by two small lattice lights. The first floor features an oversailing design with a moulded cross piece supported by a corner bracket with carved pendants. There is another projecting lattice window in an oak frame with a transom, also supported by a central carved wooden bracket, and two small lattice windows on either side. The attic gable end has an oversailing design supported by a moulded crosspiece and corner brackets with pendants, featuring a projecting attic lattice window in a box frame with a transom, and tile hanging above. A lean-to on the side has exposed vertical half-timbering and a tile roof.

At the back, there are projecting timber-framed wings with a mix of plaster and brick filling. Inside, there is evidence of a medieval small hall house with two bays, a roof featuring collar beams but no purlins, and smoke-blackened timbers. Traces of an open hearth can be seen on the floor below. There is a small early 16th century extension, and two fragments of wall paintings in the bedroom display interlaced strapwork with floral designs. The interior features much exposed timber, long profile posts, heavy ties, old floors, and a staircase, along with a chamfered brick inglenook.

Bassetts Farmhouse and its barn form a group.
