Description
The barn located to the west of Frienden Farmhouse dates from the early to mid-18th century. It is timber framed, with the sole plate resting on Kentish ragstone foundations. The barn features red brick filling that is of a later date, along with rebuilding in brick along the south wall. It has a clay tiled roof and consists of five bays, with aisles on all four sides and a roof that sweeps down into long hips. There are opposed wagon doors, with the western door situated under a raised hip-roofed porch. The timber framing is intact except for the south aisle wall. The structure includes thin scantlings, angled jowls on the main posts, and long diagonal braces on the aisle outer walls. The roof features a queen post and clasped purlins, with the aisles also having through purlins supported by struts from the aisle ties, along with straight braces to the main plates.
