Description

The barn, situated to the northwest of Old Durham Farmhouse, dates to the late 17th or early 18th century. It is constructed of English garden wall bond brick in a pattern of five bricks high with stone dressings. The roof is covered in concrete tiles. The barn comprises six bays, with a central threshing door on each side. These doors have 4-centred-arched stone surrounds, and feature bullseye openings above, which are now blocked. A segmental brick arch tops a boarded door on the east side, which has dentilled eaves. Brick buttresses were added to the west side. There are also ventilator slits. The interior has not been inspected, but it is reported to contain brick piers supporting roof trusses with curved struts; principals are truncated at high pegged collars. Two levels of purlins are present, the upper set in slots in the collars and the lower fixed to the principals. There is no ridge.
