Description

The retaining wall and gazebo on the west side of Old Durham Farmhouse date from the late 17th century to early 18th century. The retaining wall is made of rubble sandstone and features a flat coping, although much of it is missing. The gazebo, constructed from coursed rubble with an ashlar front on the west side, has no roof. It is square in shape and located halfway along the wall, with a wide segmental arch entrance on the west side that has roll moulding. Above this entrance is a large window with a roll-moulded surround. On the garden side, which is at a higher level, there is a north-facing Tudor-arched door with a roll-moulded surround. Inside, there is an arched panelled corner cupboard in the first-floor room, along with some fielded panelling and a bolection-moulded corner chimney-piece beneath a flat brick arch. The basement features some painted plaster. The roof, originally covered with pantiles, has collapsed, and the interior is now derelict. Additionally, the southwest part of the garden wall has a doorway with a Tudor-arched lintel that has fallen to the ground.
