Description

The Grasshopper Inn is a two-storey, three-window building that was altered in the late 18th century and early 19th century. It features a modern projecting public house front with a rendered facade and a Welsh slate roof. To the right, there is a covered way leading into the yard, with an inn signboard above. The first floor has red painted tile hanging and three sets of 19th-century casement windows. The building has a moulded eaves board and a bracketed gutter, with a ridge tile roof that is hipped at one end. The exterior design conceals an older framed structure, likely dating back to the 16th century or earlier. The rear elevation is made of early 19th-century red brick with blue headers and has sash windows with glazing bars. The roof ridges run at right angles to the road. Inside, there are old bar fittings, including rare pink Wedgwood beer handles. The Grasshopper Inn is named after the grasshopper in the crest of the Gresham family, who owned the Manor of Westerham from the time of Henry VIII until the late 17th century. The Grasshopper Inn, along with Nos 1 to 3, forms a group.
