Description

Church Gate House is a 17th century house that has undergone alterations. It has two storeys, an attic, and a basement, featuring three windows. The high-pitched roof is tiled and includes two gabled dormers, a bracketed gutter, and a moulded fillet under the eaves. The front of the house is now rendered, with first-floor sash windows in exposed frames set under shallow segmental arches. To the left on the ground floor, there are carriage doors, while the central door, dating from the 19th century, has six sunk panels and a plain rectangular fanlight, all beneath a pedimented hood supported by curved brackets with pendants. On the right side, there are two additional sash windows.

The east elevation is constructed of red brick, with the left section under the gable featuring a large chimney stack with tumbled brickwork at the offsets. Bands at the first-floor and eaves level extend over the chimney, with the lower band broken upwards above the staircase window. The elevation includes various windows, including two 17th century croisee windows and two small lights with old iron bars. Inside, there is an original oak staircase with spiral turned pitch pine balusters, some dado panelling, an 18th century corner cupboard, two restored inglenook fireplaces, and a brick cellar with barrel-vaulted bays. This house was once an inn called the White Horse.

Church Gate House, along with Nos 9 to 14, forms a group with its walls and yard.
