Description
The Martyrs' Memorial is a memorial built in 1904, located on Staplehurst Station Road. It is constructed from ashlar stone and features a plinth with a chamfered base and a moulded cornice, which sits on a chamfered rendered base. At the top, there is an obelisk with raised ashlar verges that frame tooled panels. A bronze plaque on the memorial is inscribed with the dedication: "This Monument is Dedicated to the Memory of Alice Potkins, Joan Bradbridge and Alice Benden of Staplehurst, also of Edmund Allen and Katherine his wife, of Frittenden, who for the faith suffered death 1556 · 1557 during the Marian persecution." The memorial was erected by the Protestants of Staplehurst and District and is surrounded by iron railings with curved spikes.
