Description

The Martyrs Memorial is located immediately to the south-east of the Norman Tower in Bury St Edmunds. It was erected in 1903 through public subscription to honor 17 Protestant martyrs. The memorial is made of stone and takes the form of an obelisk topped with a ball finial. Each face of the rectangular base features an inscribed panel. Three of these panels list the names and known details of the martyrs, most of whom were executed by burning at the stake. The fourth panel bears the inscription: 'WHO, FOR THEIR FAITHFUL TESTIMONY TO GOD'S TRUTH DURING THE REIGN OF QUEEN MARY SUFFERED DEATH IN THIS TOWN 1555-1558.'
