Description
Surrenden is a house, originally a pair of houses, dating to the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of channelled render on a rendered plinth, with a pantile roof. The house has two storeys, a plat band, and slightly raised eaves; the moulded cornice and plain parapet projects forwards over the central three bays, although there is no first-floor break underneath. Short pilasters are contained within the parapet towards each end, with the end one of each pair returning to form an acroterion to the pedimented gable ends. Four plain pilasters with banded capitals alternate with the windows beneath the central projecting section. A rendered ridge stack is located towards the left end. The front has a regular five-window arrangement with four recessed 16-pane sashes with thin glazing bars, and central French doors. An arcaded balcony spans the central projecting section, with a first-floor balustrade featuring tapering balusters; the ground floor has three round-headed arches springing from moulded imposts. The central half-glazed door is reached by one step, flanked by glazed strips, and has three rectangular top lights under a cambered architrave. Short single-storey rear wings extend to the right and left. Inside, Egyptian-style architraves taper for at least five ground-floor and eight first-floor doorways. The doors have three large horizontal panels with proud verges. It also features deep moulded skirting boards, slightly-coved cornices, and plain, slightly raised ceiling friezes. Sales particulars from 1912 show a pedimented upper storey to the entrance portico.
