Description

This barn, located about 35 metres north-north-west of Nos. 3 and 4 West Pikefish Cottages, dates from the early 19th century, with an addition from the early to mid-19th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, featuring a half-hipped plain tile roof. The structure has a red and grey brick plinth, constructed in English bond on the eastern section and Flemish bond on the western section.

The barn consists of three early 19th-century timber-framed bays arranged at right angles to the road, with an additional four bays added to the west during the early to mid-19th century. There are midstreys located at the centre of the eastern section and the third bay from the western end. The north side has full-height double doors, while the south side features lower doors. A semi-open lean-to or cattle stalls are present on the south side.

Inside, the barn has long cut jowls on the principal posts and short arch braces supporting the tie-beams. The roof is a clasped-purlin type with diminishing principal rafters, vertical queen struts to the collars, and a ridge piece. There are intermediate collars with long braces extending from the rafters to the centre, as well as intermediate wall-posts and straight tension braces to each half bay above and below the midrail. The western section is similar to the eastern but uses smaller scantling timber. This barn is included for its group value.
