Description
The Pesthouse is a house that was formerly used as a pesthouse, dating from the 16th century, with a facade from the 19th or 20th century. It features a timber frame, with the ground floor constructed of red brick in stretcher bond and the first floor tile-hung. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building has three timber-framed bays and is two storeys high. The roof is gabled to the left and has a gable that slopes down over the right bay, which has a slightly shallower pitch and is hipped to the right. There is a multiple red brick stack at the left end of the right bay. The windows are arranged irregularly, with two small recessed two-light casements near the center, and three ground-floor casements: one single-light at each end and one four-light at the right end of the central bay. A ribbed door is located at the left end of the right bay, and there is a shallow lean-to made of the same materials at the right end. The interior has only been partly inspected, revealing exposed framing on the ground floor of the central bay, with broad, close-set axial joists. There is a partition made of broadly spaced studs of relatively heavy scantling between the left and central bays. The building is marked as a pesthouse on 19th-century Ordnance Survey maps.
