Description
A pest house, later converted into a dwelling, dating from the mid to late 16th century, with later alterations. The building is timber-framed and clad in black weatherboarding, with a gabled plain tile roof. It is set back from the road and at a right angle to it.
The south front has two storeys and an attic, with a two-window range. There are two gabled dormers, each with a two-light casement window containing a central horizontal glazing bar and a single roof light. Four two-light casement windows with small panes, and a boarded door are also present. The west elevation has one similar casement window. The north rear elevation features a catslide lean-to extension, an area of brickwork, and a brick extension with a tile lean-to roof over an oven. The east elevation has a gable stack with a large base and tiled shoulders, and a further ridge-line stack that breaks through the roof near the western end. Later outbuildings of black weatherboarding and a gabled plain tile roof are situated between the house and the road.
Inside, there are two bays of high-quality mid to late 16th century timber framing, featuring internal arched wall bracing. A further two bays of 17th century framing are located at the east end, while a single bay at the west end appears to have replaced part of the original structure. Other interior features include jowled posts, a side-purlin roof with straight wind braces, remnants of original door and window openings, inserted chamfered spine beams and small joists probably dating to the 17th century, one fireplace with a surviving mantel beam, and an arched oven opening in the west bay.
The building served as the pest house for All Saints’ Parish in 1719, and possibly earlier.
