Description
Alcove Cottage is a house dating from the early 19th century. It is timber-framed and features a combination of weatherboarding and rendering, topped with low-pitched roofs made of asbestos cement slate. The building has an H-plan form with an additional narrower section on the north side.
The exterior is two storeys high and has a three-plus-one window arrangement. There are two wide gables on either side of the center and a narrow gable to the north. Each wide gable contains a 16-pane sash window with a moulded surround, positioned above a canted bay window that has a lead hipped roof and a hybrid margin glazed sash. The bay sides are white weatherboarded, which is also seen on some of the ground floor walls. The center features a single first-floor window similar to those in the gables, located above an Ionic portico, although the entablature has been altered. The narrow north wing has a 12-pane sash window and is fronted by a conservatory.
On the south side, the first floor is rendered and includes two 12-pane sash windows, while the ground floor is white boarded with two margin-glazed hybrid sash windows. The house has two large stacks on the ridgeline. At the rear, the south wing extends further west, and between the two wide wings is an area with a flat roof that includes a rear lean-to over a staircase window. The rear of the north wide wing features a 12-pane sash window on the first floor, while the ground floor at the back is largely covered by later single-storey extensions. The interior has not been inspected.
