Description
Brook Forstal is a house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with an addition from the 17th century. It is timber-framed, featuring painted brick infilling on the ground floor and plastered infilling on the first floor, topped with a plain tile roof. The main range is short and from the 17th century, while the right cross-wing is from the late 16th or early 17th century or possibly earlier. The house has two storeys, with the left gable end jettied and the jetty returning to the rear on a moulded 17th-century dragon-post. The right wing projects slightly forward and is jettied at the front. The building has broadly-spaced studding and a broad arch brace on the ground floor of the wing. The roof is hipped to the left, and the wing roof is hipped to the front. There is a central brick ridge stack. The windows feature irregular fenestration with three leaded casements: one three-light ovolo-moulded mullion window towards the left end, a small three-light casement under the stack, and a two-light casement in the right wing. A 20th-century ribbed door is located under the stack, at the junction with the wing. The interior has only been partly inspected, revealing exposed framing and a queen-post roof in the wing.
