Description

Court Cottage is a farmhouse that may date back to the 15th or early 16th century, with alterations from the 17th century and a facade from the 19th century. The building is timber framed with brick infilling. The main range has a rendered ground floor and is tile-hung above. The wing features red and grey brick on the ground floor and 19th-century red brick in Flemish bond on the first floor. The rear has broadly spaced studding with brick infilling. The roof is covered with plain tiles and may have originally been an open hall with two unequal-length bays. The left cross-wing projects slightly forward and may have an under-built jetty. The building has two storeys and a steeply pitched hipped roof with gablets, while the wing roof is hipped at the front. There is a multiple brick ridge stack at the junction of the hall and wing, possibly located in the narrower left end bay of the hall, and a slender brick stack on the left gable end. The windows are irregularly arranged, featuring one three-light casement on the first floor of the wing and one six-pane fixed light on the ground floor of the main range. The ground floor of the wing has a boarded door with a segmental head, as does the front of the right gable end, while there is a blocked door on the left end of the main range beneath the stack. A lean-to is located on the left side. The interior has only been partly inspected but includes exposed framing and a 17th-century axial beam in the right ground-floor room, which may have been inserted. The building was formerly known as Stowting Court Farm.
