Description

Great Walmstone is a house dating from the late 16th century. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, with the entrance elevation rendered. The roof is plain tiled and the building has an L-shaped plan.

The entrance front features two storeys on a plinth, with a hipped roof and a projecting hipped wing to the right. There is a cluster of stacks to the right and a 19th-century stack to the left. On the left return of the projecting wing, there is a two-storey hipped entrance porch, which includes a glazing bar sash window on the first floor set in a chamfered surround with a label hood. The entrance has a 20th-century rib and stud door within a chamfered arched surround. The fenestration is irregular, consisting of wooden casements and glazing bar sashes.

The rear elevation has two storeys and an attic on a high plinth, with a projecting and offset section to the right. It features a hipped roof with two hipped dormers and stacks to the right and rear left. The fenestration is again irregular, with wooden casements and glazing bar sashes in three original chamfered surrounds with labels on the first floor. The rightmost window, although now bricked in, retains its original wooden mullions. On the ground floor to the left, there is one wooden casement with a label-drip surround and a segmental headed glazing bar sash. A boarded door is located to the right, and there is a tiled outshot at the end right.
