Description

Avenue Lodge is a former lodge that has been converted into a house, dating from around 1870 to 1880, with a small 20th-century extension at the rear. It is designed in the Gothic style and constructed from red brick in English bond, featuring black polychrome diaperwork decoration and stone dressings. The building has slate roofs and a clustered brick chimneystack, with an L-shaped plan and one storey plus attics.

The front elevation includes a projecting gable on the right side, which has stone coping and kneelers, and a casement window with leaded lights. There is a moulded band between the floors and a plinth. At the angle of the L, there is a stone two-centred arched doorcase with a plank door and three steps leading up to it. The side elevation features a lancet window on the first floor and a flat-arched doorcase with another plank door and three steps. The rear elevation has a gable on the right side with stone coping and kneelers, casement windows with leaded lights, and a small brick extension from the 20th century on the left side.

Inside, the lounge contains a fireplace with a 19th-century round-headed cast iron firegrate. The kitchen retains its fireplace and a round-headed alcove. There are brick steps leading down to a cellar with a barrel-vaulted ceiling. The dogleg staircase features stick balusters and chamfered newel posts topped with ball finials. The first-floor rooms have original fire surrounds with decorative cast iron basket grates.
