Description
17 William Street is a house that also serves as a purpose-built butcher's shop, constructed around 1900. The building is made of yellow stock brick, featuring gauged red brick arches above the first-floor windows, and has a slate roof. It stands three storeys tall and is positioned on a corner, with two windows on each side. The Mortimer Street elevation has vertically hung sash windows, while the William Street side showcases double-storey bays topped with gables.
The ground floor boasts an impressive butcher's shop front, which includes incised lettering that is gilded onto an inclined glazed fascia. The upper cornice moulding of the fascia base acts as a window blind restrainer board. Each side of the shop front has two principal windows, each with an arched top center pane. The glazing bars are moulded and decorated at the apex, and the side windows feature fixed fanlights adorned with sunburst leaded glazing in stippled glass. The shop front is flanked by heavily fluted and moulded pilasters with brackets for the fascia box. The stallriser is decorated with mosaic tiling that displays the shop's name, framed in raised and ornately moulded blue tiles and bordered with opaque white plain tiles, complemented by moulded blue skirting tiles. Inside, there is a panelled accounts kiosk that includes the original clock.
