Description
The Mafeking Hero Public House is a coaching inn and hotel with an incorporated shop, dating from the 18th century, with early 19th-century extensions and minor 20th-century alterations. The building features walls of painted brickwork in Flemish bond, a high plinth, cambered ground-floor openings, and a first-floor band. It has a hipped tile roof with a moulded eaves band and brick dentil eaves, as well as a catslide roof over part of the rear. The structure includes a large L-shaped wing on the west side and rear, a carriage arch, and a main block with a smaller rear wing. The south front elevation is two storeys high with a layout of one window, one window, and three windows. It has Victorian sash windows and casements. The early 20th-century entrance features a large moulded canopy, decorative architrave, and spreading steps with wrought-iron rails. The rear yard reveals a variety of vernacular structures, including former stables that have been converted into garages and stores.
