Description

The George Public House is a coaching inn that dates from the early 19th century, likely with earlier origins, and underwent alterations and extensions in the late 19th century. The front is painted stone, while the rear is constructed of coursed rubble stone. The carriage arch has been refronted in cream brick, with the rear made of orange-red brick, both using English garden-wall bond. The rear wings are made of orange-red brick in stretcher bond and pink and cream mottled brick in Flemish bond. The later rear wing has a pantile roof, while the other sections have slate roofs. A conjoined stack of cream and red brick is located at the center left of the building.

The structure is three stories high with a four-window front. There is a cambered carriage arch with voussoirs at the left end. The right part of the building sits on a plinth and features a central doorcase with plain pilasters and a cornice hood supported by bulbous brackets. The door consists of six raised-and-fielded panels. The flanking windows have two-pane upper sashes and single-pane lower sashes made of opaque glass that includes the words "George Hotel." The remaining windows are four-pane sashes, with the second-floor windows being squat, all featuring painted flat arches and stone sills. The building was originally known as the Black Horse Inn.
