Description
The Wyvern is a former coaching hotel, now serving as a shop and living accommodation. It dates from the 18th century and was altered in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of brown brick in irregular bond and features a grey slate roof. It has two storeys plus attics, with seven windows on the upper storey.
The lower storey has been significantly altered and includes, from left to right, a coach entry leading to the stable yard, a shop window, a replaced door beneath a semi-circular fanlight in a softwood-framed open porch, a projecting 19th-century bay in Flemish bond with a replaced window under a two-ring camber head, and a small canted bay window. The upper storey has been refenestrated in the early 19th century, with Georgian window openings reduced in size beneath original camber arches, featuring small-pane casements, splayed reveals and heads, and labels. A cornice with modillions from the 18th century runs along the top. There are three dormers with four panes each under shallow slate roofs, and a brown brick ridge chimney is located on the right side.
At the rear, the former stable yard includes a "barrel vault" canopy made of corrugated iron on a steel frame, resembling a Dutch barn. Inside, both main storeys have been much altered; the 19th-century open-well staircase features shaped newels and square balusters. The attic rooms contain three broad-board doors with shaped wrought-iron hinges.
